From August 25 to 29, Jianjie Group proudly participated in the 10th International Conference on Science and Technology of Ironmaking (ICSTI 2025). Advancing Cold Briquetting of Iron Ore Concentrates for Green Steelmaking
At ICSTI 2025, as the lead author of Jianjie’s research paper, professor Cai presented pioneering research on cold briquetting of iron ore concentrates, particularly for use in gas-based shaft furnace direct reduced iron (DRI) production.
Traditional oxidized pellet production typically requires high-temperature roasting at 1200–1350°C, which results in high energy consumption and strict raw material quality requirements.
In recent years, cold briquettes have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional high-temperature roasted oxidized pellets. This innovative approach eliminates the need for high-temperature roasting, significantly reducing energy consumption and investment costs, while providing a greener, low-carbon feedstock for DRI production.
This studies have explored optimizing briquette performance through the synergistic effects of organic and inorganic components:
- Organic components aim to improve the cold strength of briquettes and create internal pores upon decomposition, which promote reduction reactions.
- Inorganic components enhance both cold and hot strength, improving briquette stability during transportation and reduction.
Additionally, research indicates that different iron ore raw materials perform differently in briquetting. For example, magnetite demonstrates better high-temperature stability, making it advantageous in certain application scenarios
These explorations provide valuable insights into advancing cold briquetting technology for green metallurgy, reflecting the industry’s global push to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. Building on these findings, Jianjie’s R&D team will continue to innovate binder solutions, driving technical excellence and promoting sustainable steelmaking.
